The next day...so far so good

Pau d'Arco Bark
Hola amigos...
The first day of the cleanse went well. The only thing I think I could have eaten better was dinner. When I get home at 9:00 PM after a long day, I am starving. I ate 2 frozen veggie burgers and 2 slices of Ezekiel bread. I added lettuce and a tad of ranch dressing. The ranch has dairy in it, but it was only a bit and I have not had time to make my own mayo yet. I drank a glass of unsweetened almond milk and then pau d'arco tea.

Pau d'arco tea is great when you are cleansing. Shams introduced me to it a long time ago and I plan on drinking it daily during the cleanse. Here is some info on Pau d'Arco...

"Pau d'Arco tea or tincture concoctions have had beneficial effects for cancer victims, anywhere from alleviation of chemotherapy symptoms to complete remission of tumors. An article published by Dr. Daniel B. Mowrey on Pau d'Arco stated that "who Lapacho has produced clinical anti-cancer effects without side effects." This taheebo tea has been helpful to many.

Candida Albicans, a fungus which causes yeast infections, has also been treated by the Pau d'Arco herb. Clinical studies also showed strong in vitro activity against various other bacteria, fungi and yeast, including: Aspergillus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Helicobacter pylori (common cause of stomach ulcers), Bucella, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and dysentery. ""
Basically its great for getting bad bacteria out of your gut. You can get it in bulk or capsules. Click Here for my favorite online herb shop Mountain Rose Herbs. They have great medicinal herbs and yummy oils etc...

I also need to up my water intake. Some days I am great about it and drink about 100 oz of water a day, but some days I don't get nearly enough. I can really tell a difference when I drink lots of water.
Today's menu:
Oatmeal with stevia and cinnamon
Chai tea with stevia and unsweetened almond milk
Hummus & rice crakcers
Tomato & Cuke salad
Apple and almond butter
Dinner???
I really need to get to the grocery store!

Day One...

Day one of the yeast free diet & Heather's life makeover!
I really am looking forward to it instead of dreading it. I am excited about losing weight, feeling 100% better and cleansing out toxins in my gut & blood. This is the first of many steps I am taking to live a more authentic life that honors the way I want to live. I am not selfish, but I give a lot and I also tend to morph myself to adapt to situations that I may or may not want to be a part of. That stops now.
Whew. Powerful.
I just felt a bolt of positive strong energy jump into my heart.
I do not think this is going to be easy. Tears will flow, but so will joy, smiles and freedom.

First things first, clean the shell. My body needs a good cleaning, scrubbing down with greens, water and herbs. Great food, acupuncture, massage and yoga are my new drugs of choice. Alcohol and anxiety meds - be gone! I am finished with you! I did the right thing and tapered off of the meds that I have been on for 2 years. Since Hailey was diagnosed with the big C word medication was not an option, I needed it. I think I would be in a padded room if it were not for those pills. However - its time for me to let them go. This is a personal decision for me. Some people are much better off on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. Its medically necessary. So, if you are not ready for this - DO NOT DO IT. Always talk to a professional before you start on this journey.

Cleaning my shell will include a "yeast free" diet. Its really the best diet for me. I have done it before and felt like a million bucks. But, I like beer, and pizza, and cheese...so its not a lifetime diet for me. However, I will only use the aforementioned foods in moderation since they do not jive with my organic constitution.

What is a yeast free diet? The "no list" is pretty long, but here it goes:
No cheese/dairy (except eggs)
No vinegar, with the exception of Apple Cider vinegar with the "mother"; this one is difficult because all condiments have vinegar, so you have to make your own dressings and such - I need to find mayo with no vinegar...is that even possible?
No SUGAR. At all.
No white food - like white bread, white potatoes, pasta etc...
No fermented foods, so no soy sauce, pickles or alcohol (how will I make it through the nights when I just want a cocktail?!)
No artificial sweeteners like aspartame and look out for sugar alcohols in "sugar free" foods

YES FOODS:
Veggies - the greener the better
Eggs
Lean, organic meats (yea...I am going to have to work on that one since I am a vegetarian, ugh.)
Protein shakes
Certain fruits like dark berries and avocados (can not have anything too sweet like pineapple)
Lemons, limes
Seafood
All spices and herbs
Whole grains like brown rice, rice pasta and quinoa (I will explain quinoa in another post)
Beans
Oatmeal
Tofu and tempeh in small amounts
Braggs liquid aminos
Ezekiel bread - but only on occasion
Lots, and lots of water

That is the gist of it. Eating out is the biggest challenge - and family gatherings. Why does everything at a family dinner have to include mayo and cheese?
Today's menu
Unsalted rice cake with almond butter and organic blueberries (breakfast)
Egg cups (mid morning and afternoon snack)
Hummus with rice crackers (lunch)
Tomato & Cucumber salad with olive oil, dill and apple cider vinegar (lunch)
Apple with almond butter (pre-yoga snack/dinner)
Brown rice and beans if I am hungry after yoga tonight - if not, I am really going to try to stick to tea because eating at 9:00PM every night is not good for the digestive system

Till tomorrow....

Power Balance

Hi all
Today I went to one of those networking meetings. It was fun and I met some great women. One of the ladies sells these power balance bracelets. They are rubber and have some sort of hologram on each side. She did this test by yanking on my arm to see if I fell out of balance, and I did. She then handed me the bracelet and did the same thing and I did not move.
I immediately purchased the bracelet.
I came home and did the same experiment on Mike and dang, it worked. So strange!

http://www.powerbalance.com/powerbalance

scam? for real?
I can feel the difference wearing it...is it mental? Mind over matter or does this bracelet have some truth to it?

Acupuncture - my Qi is stuck.

I am in love with acupuncture. I think its the best thing since sliced bread. It does not hurt that my acupuncturist is really cool and really knows her stuff. Most people are afraid of acupuncture because of the needles. When I recommend acupuncture to someone, they ALWAYS ask "doesn't it hurt?"
No. The needles do not hurt. There is sometimes a sensation after the needle (which is about as thin as a hair) goes in - and that is your Qi moving, or changing or something like that. The sensation sometimes feels like an electric shock, warming, really good or sometimes it hurts (but only for a second).

I can hear you saying "Hello Heather~~~~~ I took health class in high school and I don't remember anything called a Qi." Well smarty pants, that is because its not recognized in American medicine - but Qi (pronounced chi) is the foundation of Chinese medicine and can be compared to Prana in Yoga.  It is your life force, your energy, the stuff that we can not pull a vile of blood and see how your Qi is doing....but believe me, you and your body know when your Qi/Prana is out of sorts.

This energy runs along meridians in your body and it gets stuck, festers, gets stagnant, over produces or is just plain out of whack. This is where the tiny little needles come in - stick the needle in at the EXACT right place and the Qi moves or calms down or whatever its supposed to do.
Beyond that - you need to talk to an expert about Qi because I understand the concept, but I can not explain it further without royally messing something up.

I do know that one of the best spots to heal your kidneys is in your chin/calf area. I also know that one time when Shams (my acupuncturist - I sound very possessive here, but I will share!) put a needle in the back of my knee I felt a lightening bolt of energy shoot all the way through my big toe. Every time I get acupuncture, I leave feeling as though I got a massage - or better. I normally feel very, very relaxed and kind of tingly in a good way. Amazing stuff.
So for more professional info - click here for Shams's website.

Shams told me that that I have stagnate liver qi. She recommended some herbs for this and acupuncture once a week till I get the liver qi moving again. So, me being me, I had to look up what she actually means by stagnated liver qi. This makes no sense to my American medicine brain. The symptoms included something that knocked me out of my chair: a constant lump in the throat. I HAVE HAD A LUMP IN MY THROAT FOR OVER A YEAR. It drives me nuts. Nothing I can do about it. I have tried tea, burping, not talking unless necessary, somebody recommended crystals and I have meditated and practiced pranayama trying to make it go away. The pranayama (breath work) did the trick for a day or so, but it always comes back. So annoying. I am thrilled that these herbs and the acupuncture will hopefully get it to go away. Whooo hooo!

till next time...

Lunch...

I want a bento box! I really think one of these suckers will be handy when packing up lunch. They are so cute and portion control is a cinch. Also, I would not have to worry about finding stupid lids to match my bowls in the morning...and suffering through the tupperware avalanche.  Click here to see it on amazon

Wellness Challenge

I have decided to start a wellness challenge at Soul Shine. It will be good for me and you. We can all participate even if you do not attend classes at Soul Shine. If you do attend Soul Shine, the grand prize is a free unlimited month pass! Whoo Hoo!

This is not going to be your typical weight loss challenge. I hope we can all shed a few pounds if we need to, but I want to focus on WELLNESS.

The categories will go somethin' like this...
Yoga classes
Yoga at home
Cardio exercise
Going vegetarian for a day
Going without dairy for a day
Getting outside
Reading a book that has nothing to do with self improvement
Reading a book that does involve self improvement
Quiet Time & Meditation
Trying something new
Spending 10 minutes alone in the morning, just breathing and getting ready for the day (no tv, Internet...)
Going without TV for a day
Playing a game (cards, tag, golf...let your inner child out!)
Random acts of kindness

You will get a point for everything you do and the person with the most points will win. I am thinking it will last a month - starting August 1st!

Ahhh...Sweet Relief

Hello energy
Hello sun
Hello light

Hello friends

Honestly, lately I have been down and out - way too busy for one human being to be and I ran myself into the ground. My head felt like pancake batter. My body feels heavy and cumbersome - unless I am practicing yoga asanas, then I feel good. I also found out that I have a B vitamin deficiency - what a relief! I thought I was just tired, dizzy and more tired just because I was so busy. Now I am getting B vitamin shots and I feel so much better. Its only a temporary fix though, I still need to supplement with oral vitamins and such. I am also adding more B to my diet with fortified foods. Since most of the foods that have these energy boosters in it are yucky - like liver, gag, even when I ate meat, I did not eat organs...gag again...so that is out of the question. Eggs and cheese have lots of Beeees in them, so that is handy for me since I love both.

I have missed blogging. I am committing to blogging 2 - 3 times a week now. I am seriously also working on yoga videos. I know, I know - you have heard this before, but I am serious! I just need to figure out the sound situation...the studio is like a very deep cave with a very bad echo - so I am going to have to do something about that. If you have any ideas let me know.

I am also on a journey of cleansing and hopefully in the process losing 20 - 30 LBS. I will be the first to admit that when my schedule got crazy, my diet got sloppy. Eating out a LOT, BK veggie burgers and fries, beer, frosty Pina Coladas at the beach, fried crab claws...goodness, I am getting hungry. Let me wipe the drool off my chin

Anyway...the above mentioned nasty, yet delicious, food is the reason I am cleansing. So, no beer. Sigh. Only goooood food, fresh veggies, brown rice, eggs, almond butter, berries etc...that I am not so sad about. But honestly - beer is the devil on one's waist line. Plus I am sure my liver will appreciate a break.

So, here I am, being totally open and honest with you about my weight. I will get into more details later about emotional eating, diet pills, food, recipes and such. I hope you will hang out with me on this journey.

Namaste, Love & Light,

Heather

The best update ever....

Hello!!!!! I am sure most of you know by now, but I just wanted to make it official on the blog. Hailey and I went to MD Anderson (stupid videos coming to you very soon!) and the specialist at MD Anderson said that she does not have any cancer in her body. She does not have get chemo for at least 3 months and she will have a scan at MD ANDERSON in 3 months.
The doctors/techs at Athens Regional read her previous scans incorrectly, giving us a scare with that "tumor on her bladder" thing.

Today is a day to celebrate and to thank all of you who have been praying for us, supporting us and I just want to say Namaste (the divine light in me honors the divine light in you)

Hailey Update

Hey all.
Hailey has new tumors. There is at least one big one on the muscle tissue surrounding her bladder. She will have surgery sometime this week we guess. Her oncologist wanted to wait to send her to TX for scans AND surgery, but the consensus now is that she need surgery ASAP.
How long can she keep doing this? She will be on chemo for the rest of her life - she may get lucky and have a few months off here and there - but basically she will be sick from chemo and cancer forever. What would you do if you were faced with that?
Hailey's attitude is that she will do whatever she has to in order to fight. That is good. I love that. I may have already ditched the whole chemo thing, eating raw kale and carrots and traveling in an RV for a while.

For those who don't know, my mom also has cancer. She had a localized tumor taken out of her breast last week. Mom is doing OK, she is more worried about Hailey than anything. Shocker. She has an appt with the doctor on Tuesday to get her plan together. I am guessing that she will get radiation, I can NOT see Sheila going through chemo.

Just a quickie...

To explain my FB status, I am just really irritated today. I truly do not fake my happiness and joyful spirit - but today I am mad.
Hailey is in the hospital again because of her blood count. I just saw her yesterday! She was fine...she had color, we were joking around, she got up and sat on the porch with me - then BAM! Back in the pokey. That is one of the MANY crappy things about cancer, it can catch you off guard. One minute everything seems OK, then back to the hospital.
Whatever, I know she is in good hands and she is still here. So praise God for that. God's got it. I know he does, whatever the outcome (wether I like it or not) is not in my control.
So, I will just try and let it go and enjoy Lost tonight.

Namaste,

H

We can change the world with our own two hands....

Wow, its been a long time since I wrote on here...I feel bad and I have been missing it. I am so busy with Soul Shine, work, family, trying to keep up on the laundry...blah, blah, blah...trying to fit a social life in there somewhere...and starting a new clothing line (LiciaLu) I have completely left a bunch of people hanging.

I know you are all wondering how Hailey is doing...she is...well, OK. That is the best I can muster. She is OK. Not good, not by any means, but not terrible. Not terrible by her standards anyway - by ours - it would be terrible. If you could not keep any food down, felt like getting out of bed just to use the bathroom and get some water, you would classify that as terrible. However, we can classify it as OK in Hailey's world. If you ask her how she feels, she will tell you straight up "terrible, $^$(*#!!$@!&%&*#, terrible". I don't know if I could be that kind. She spends all day in bed, watching TV and she will get up to go to the bathroom, get some water or maybe some food. The food does not settle for long though, so she is not too keen on food now.

She is at my parents house, and her treatment is out patient. We all honestly thought that this round of chemo would be easier. Well, we were wrong. Its all poison. Stinking poison. Which again leads me to wonder, which is worse? Cancer or chemo? You would think in 2010 we would have a better way...

It hurts, it really does. My dad asked me today if I was scared. I told him no. She has fight, she is talking, she is cracking jokes, protecting her daughter, loving and spunky. She has spark in her eyes. Most importantly she has her faith. I will let him know, and I will let you know when I am scared. But, it hurts to see my crazy ass sister sick as hell and laid up in bed all day. I still get to cuddle with her, watch movies and most importantly make fun of our parents (haha!) - so I am going to savor all of it I can and I am still holding out for a miracle from the Good Lord. He IS a Good Lord.

In the meantime you can change the world with your own two hands - go out there and do it. Stop sitting around and waiting for your invitation. If there is anything that this teaches us, GO, get out there and DO IT. Whatever it is....DO IT.

I love you all

Update on Hailey

Hello!
I have not been keeping you updated on Hailey! Bad Heather!

My sweet sis has had one full round of chemo, it kicked her butt. She was in the hospital 3 days following the chemo treatment for 6 days. She got 2 blood transfusions, including platelets. She has ONE more round of this kind of chemo (we think) and then its on to out patient chemo. This will be good for her because the chemo will not be nearly as hard on her as the type she is currently taking. The question is, will it keep killing the tumors? We don't know yet. Just pray that the doctors know what they are doing and that Hailey will keep her Spirits up in order to fight. The great thing is that her quality of life will improve dramatically with out patient chemo. She will be able to be at home more often, spend more quality time with Colleen and James. She misses being at home with her stuff, TV, dogs and family. Sometimes it just rips my heart out. Sometimes it rips her heart out. Sometimes it rips James' heart out. We are all doing the best we can, but watching someone's life be taken over by cancer is (in Hailey's words) No Bueno!

We are all learing lessons, getting closer to God and to each other. I know that God is working toward the Good for all who love him. Its amazing, we still love Him, and love Him even more through this. Sometimes we just need to stop trying to make sense out of it all and just trust Him. That is SO hard sometimes! I know that we are only here for a blink of an eye compared to the eternal heaven that awaits us - but why does it have to be so hard? A dear friend of mine thinks maybe its to cleanse us for our jobs in heaven. I don't know, but that sounded pretty good to me. Or, just stop trying to make sense of it in our computerized brains and just trust in our hearts that its all working for the good for those that love Him.

Yoga for Strength and Toning

Tonight Soul Shine will be hosting 2 new classes. First up is our 6 week Beginner Series with China. This is going to be a great class where she takes you through the basics of yoga so you will feel comfortable in the other classes we offer. This series is great for true beginners and for people who may need a refresher course.

I am teaching Yoga for Strength and Toning. I am SO excited about this class! We will warm up in the traditional Viniyoga way with some breath work, apanasana to lengthen our spine and some more moves to get our muscles warm - then we will move into some Sun Salutations and then into postures like Chair pose, Plank and Boat (pictured). This class will focus on holding poses longer and targeting large muscle groups like our abs, arms and legs!

See you tonight at Soul Shine!

Top 10 Reasons to Try Yoga

Top 10 Reasons to Try Yoga

© Yoga Alliance 2006
1. STRESS RELIEF: Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging

relaxation, yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Related benefits

include lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improving digestion and boosting the

immune system as well as easing symptoms of conditions such as anxiety, depression,

fatigue, asthma and insomnia.

2. PAIN RELIEF: Yoga can ease pain. Studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga

asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with

conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as

well as arthritis, back and neck pain, and other chronic conditions. Some practitioners

report that even emotional pain can be eased through the practice of yoga.

3. BETTER BREATHING: Yoga teaches people to take slower, deeper breaths. This helps to

improve lung function, trigger the body’s relaxation response and increase the amount of

oxygen available to the body.

4. FLEXIBILITY: Yoga helps to improve flexibility and mobility, increasing range of movement

and reducing aches and pains. Many people can’t touch their toes during their first yoga

class. Gradually they begin to use the correct muscles. Over time, the ligaments, tendons

and muscles lengthen, increasing elasticity, making more poses possible. Yoga also helps to

improve body alignment resulting in better posture and helping to relieve back, neck, joint

and muscle problems.

5. INCREASED STRENGTH: Yoga asanas (postures) use every muscle in the body, helping to

increase strength literally from head to toe. And, while these postures strengthen the body,

they also provide an additional benefit of helping to relieve muscular tension.

6. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: Yoga (even less vigorous styles) can aid weight control efforts by

reducing the cortisol levels as well as by burning excess calories and reducing stress. Yoga

also encourages healthy eating habits and provides a heightened sense of well being and

self esteem.

7. IMPROVED CIRCULATION: Yoga helps to improve circulation and, as a result of various

poses, more efficiently moves oxygenated blood to the body’s cells.

8. CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING: Even gentle yoga practice can provide cardiovascular

benefits by lowering resting heart rate, increasing endurance and improving

oxygen uptake during exercise.

9. FOCUS ON THE PRESENT: Yoga helps us to focus on the present, to become more aware

and to help create mind body health. It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination,

reaction time and memory.

10. INNER PEACE: The meditative aspects of yoga help many to reach a deeper, more

spiritual and more satisfying place in their lives. Many who begin to practice for other

reasons have reported this to be a key reason that yoga has become an essential part of

their daily lives.

Birthdays, Milestones and New Year

I love the new year. It just feels like everybody gets a fresh start. As a bonus, I get to celebrate my birthday 8 days into the year. I do not like making "resolutions" because they really do not work. I do, however, like to take this opportunity to improve myself and take stock in mistakes, learn from them, and move on. This year, I am taking the bull by the horns. This is not somebody else's life that I am living, its MINE. God gave it to me to live, and live big. He promises us an abundant life, this may not mean financially abundant...which is what most of us think about when we read this...but I think it just means that if we use our natural talents that God gave us, give thanks, be humble, and work hard, we will have an abundant life. Just look around you! Look outside! Its a frozen tundra in Georgia this morning, but the birds are making the most of it. The love it. I have seen blue birds, blue jays and mocking birds singing, finding food and using their natural talents to bring a smile to my frozen face. These little birdies are also happy with what they have. I did not hear them complaining, unionizing or going on strike against mother nature because their nests were covered in ice. They just got up, sang their songs, ate breakfast and are now going on about their day.

This is where I am at. I am going to be getting up, using my natural talents to bring a smile to someone else's face and giving thanks for what I have. That is my "resolution" for my 35th year on this planet. It is time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Happy birthday to me (and Elvis!)

Namaste,
H
